Leadership Through Dialogue

Dialogue is essential for leaders because it addresses Engagement, Listening and Presence (ELP).

It helps leaders to engage better by:

  • Being in connection with others
  • Trusting and being trusted
  • Being vulnerable

It helps leaders to listen better by:

  • Using their intuition
  • Learning to use not only their ears, but also their eyes and bodily sensations in listening to others
  • Suspending their judgments (understand before being understood)

It helps leaders to increase their presence by:

  • Developing their self-reflection and self-awareness
  • Expressing themselves with authenticity
  • Being clear on how they want to make a difference

Core Values

ELP focuses on three core values where we can support meaningful and impactful development: Engagement, Listening and Presence (ELP).

Engagement Engage with yourself, others, and the world around you. Leadership is a team sport.

Listening Listen with your ears, eyes and bodily sensations. Listen more than you talk.

Presence Drop the corporate shield and show up as who you truly are.

Chatham House Rule

ELP adheres strictly to the Chatham House Rule: ‘When a meeting, or part thereof, is held under the Chatham House Rule, participants are free to use the information received, but neither the identity nor the affiliation of the speaker(s), nor that of any other participant, may be revealed.’

The ELP Concept of Dialogue

ELP has created their own unique concept of Dialogue, inspired by ancient and modern traditions, such as Socratic Dialogue, Bohmian Dialogue, Ubuntu, Generative Dialogue and the work of Bill Isaacs. Essential in the ELP-approach is the role of the moderators, who are holding the space and are guardians of the process. The presence of the moderators allows the participants to focus on the content of the dialogue without concerning themselves with the process. However, participants are still accountable for their contribution. We invite them to check with themselves if they are honest, if they are listening carefully and how they can take their dialogues one step deeper.

Unlocking the Power of Dialogue

ELP offers organizations the opportunity to use Dialogue as a tool for leadership development. You can apply Dialogue in your organization in four ways:

1. Leadership Dialogue In Your Organization. We define a relevant topic and find an appealing guest to be interviewed. Including moderated Roundtables.

2. Training For Dialogue Moderators. Train selected staff to facilitate meaningful Dialogue.

3. Cascading decisions. Building alignment by engaging in Dialogue.

4. Dialogue Lunches. Without Moderator, but with guidelines for the group to conduct their Dialogue.
